Sod Pallet Calculator
Farms quote by the pallet, so this version leads with pallets. Confirm your farm’s pallet size — most are 450–500 ft² but some run 400 or 700. A full pallet weighs over a ton; two fit in a pickup only if it is a one-ton truck.
Order 252 rolls (6 pallets) — sod farms sell by the pallet (≈500 ft²) or the roll; order the morning it is cut.

How to calculate sod by hand
Rolls = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × 1.05 ÷ 10 ft² per roll · Pallets = rolls ÷ 50
Worked example
- Area: 50 ft × 20 ft = 1,000 ft².
- Cuts and waste 5%: 1,000 × 1.05 = 1,050 ft².
- Rolls: 1,050 ÷ 10 = 105 rolls (or 394 slabs at 2.67 ft²).
- Pallets: 105 ÷ 50 = 2.1 → 3 pallets, or ask the farm for 2 pallets plus 5 loose rolls.
- Standard roll
- 2 × 5 ft = 10 ft² · ≈ 30 lb
- Slab (Southern)
- 16 × 24 in = 2.67 ft²
- Pallet
- 450–500 ft² · 2,000–3,000 lb
- Big roll
- 4 × 50 ft = 200 ft² (machine laid)
Questions crews ask
How many pallets of sod for a quarter acre?
A quarter acre is 10,890 ft²; with 5% extra that is 11,435 ft², about 23 pallets of 500 ft² or 1,144 rolls. That is a machine-laid job — ask the farm about big rolls.
How much does a pallet of sod weigh?
2,000–3,000 lb depending on moisture and thickness. Freshly cut wet sod is heaviest. A half-ton pickup can carry about a third of a pallet; have full pallets delivered.
How long does sod last on a pallet?
24 hours in cool weather, 12 in summer heat — the centre of the stack heats up and the grass yellows. Schedule delivery for the morning you lay it and water within 30 minutes of laying.
