Sod Calculator
Sod is sold by the square foot, cut into rolls (2 × 5 ft, 10 ft²) or slabs (16 × 24″) and stacked on pallets of about 450–500 ft². Enter the lawn area; the calculator adds 5% for cuts around curves and beds. Odd shapes: break them into rectangles and run each.
Order 105 rolls (3 pallets) — sod farms sell by the pallet (≈500 ft²) or the roll; order the morning it is cut.

How to calculate sod by hand
Rolls = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × 1.05 ÷ 10 ft² per roll · Pallets = rolls ÷ 50
Worked example
- Area: 50 ft × 20 ft = 1,000 ft².
- Cuts and waste 5%: 1,000 × 1.05 = 1,050 ft².
- Rolls: 1,050 ÷ 10 = 105 rolls (or 394 slabs at 2.67 ft²).
- Pallets: 105 ÷ 50 = 2.1 → 3 pallets, or ask the farm for 2 pallets plus 5 loose rolls.
- Standard roll
- 2 × 5 ft = 10 ft² · ≈ 30 lb
- Slab (Southern)
- 16 × 24 in = 2.67 ft²
- Pallet
- 450–500 ft² · 2,000–3,000 lb
- Big roll
- 4 × 50 ft = 200 ft² (machine laid)
Questions crews ask
How much sod do I need?
Measure length × width in feet for square feet, add 5% for cuts, and divide by the piece size — 10 ft² per standard roll or 2.67 ft² per slab. A 50 × 20 ft lawn (1,000 ft²) needs 105 rolls, a little over 2 pallets.
How many square feet are on a pallet of sod?
Usually 450–500 ft² — 45–50 rolls or 170–190 slabs — but farms vary from 400 to 700 ft². Ask, because a “pallet” quote is meaningless without the square footage. A full pallet weighs 2,000–3,000 lb.
How much extra sod should I order?
5% for a simple rectangle, 10% if the lawn has curves, beds or a lot of edges to cut around. Sod does not keep — order what you can lay the same day and have it delivered the morning it is cut.
How big is a roll of sod?
The common roll is 2 ft × 5 ft = 10 ft², about 1½″ thick and 25–35 lb. Southern warm-season grasses often come as 16 × 24″ slabs (2.67 ft²). Commercial big rolls are 4 × 50 ft or larger and need a machine.
How much does sod cost?
$0.35–$0.85 per square foot for the sod itself ($175–$425 per 500 ft² pallet), $0.30–$0.70 per ft² more to have it installed, so $1–$2 per ft² installed. A 1,000 ft² lawn runs $1,000–$2,000 installed, $350–$850 DIY.
