How to calculate sod by hand
Rolls = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × 1.05 ÷ 10 ft² per roll · Pallets = rolls ÷ 50
Worked example
- Area: 50 ft × 20 ft = 1,000 ft².
- Cuts and waste 5%: 1,000 × 1.05 = 1,050 ft².
- Rolls: 1,050 ÷ 10 = 105 rolls (or 394 slabs at 2.67 ft²).
- Pallets: 105 ÷ 50 = 2.1 → 3 pallets, or ask the farm for 2 pallets plus 5 loose rolls.
- Standard roll
- 2 × 5 ft = 10 ft² · ≈ 30 lb
- Slab (Southern)
- 16 × 24 in = 2.67 ft²
- Pallet
- 450–500 ft² · 2,000–3,000 lb
- Big roll
- 4 × 50 ft = 200 ft² (machine laid)
How we price this
The low, typical and high columns are the 20th, 50th and 80th percentile of published us national averages for sod rolls (10 ft²), delivery and labor. They are estimates for budgeting, not quotes — enter your own supplier and crew prices above to replace them. Ranges are re-checked monthly; see the methodology page for how every number on this site is derived.

Questions crews ask
How much does a pallet of sod cost?
$150–$450 per pallet depending on grass and region — that is $0.35–$0.85 per square foot for a 500 ft² pallet. Fescue and bluegrass are cheapest; zoysia, St. Augustine and named bermuda cultivars cost the most. Delivery is $50–$150 per drop.
How much does it cost to sod 1,000 square feet?
$350–$850 for the sod, plus $100 delivery, plus $300–$800 to have it laid — $1,000–$2,000 installed. Soil prep (tilling, 2–3″ of topsoil, grading) can add $500–$1,500 if the ground is poor.
Is sod cheaper than seed?
No — seed is $0.10–$0.20 per ft² versus $1–$2 for sod installed. Sod buys an instant lawn that can be walked on in two weeks and stops erosion on slopes; seed takes a season and needs steady watering.
