How Much Limestone for a 10×20 Driveway?
A 10 × 20 ft driveway (200 ft²) at 4″ deep needs 3.9 tons of crushed limestone — 2.47 yd³ net plus 10% waste. Order 4.00 t — quarries sell by the ton; a tri-axle carries about 20 tons per load.

How to calculate crushed limestone by hand
Tons = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27 × 1.45 t/yd³
Worked example
- Area: 50 ft × 12 ft = 600 ft².
- Volume: 600 ft² × (4 in ÷ 12) = 200 ft³ = 7.41 yd³.
- Weight: 7.41 yd³ × 1.45 t/yd³ = 10.7 tons.
- Compaction and waste 10%: 10.7 × 1.10 = 11.8 tons → order 12 tons, one tri-axle load.

Questions crews ask
How much limestone do I need for a driveway?
Square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324 gives cubic yards; × 1.45 gives tons. A 12 × 50 ft driveway at 4″ of #57 is 7.4 yd³ ≈ 10.7 tons; order 12 with compaction. For a new driveway lay 4–6″ of ¾″ minus first, then 2″ of #57.
How much does a ton of limestone cover?
About 56 ft² at 4″ deep, 75 ft² at 3″ and 112 ft² at 2″ for #57. Limestone is a little denser than granite gravel, so a ton covers slightly less than the 1.4 t/yd³ figures used for generic gravel.
What is #57 limestone used for?
#57 is ¾″ washed stone with no fines: driveway top course, drainage around pipes and foundations, under slabs and in French drains. It stays loose and drains. For a base that locks together use ¾″ minus or screenings.
