How to calculate crushed limestone by hand

Tons = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27 × 1.45 t/yd³

Worked example

  1. Area: 50 ft × 12 ft = 600 ft².
  2. Volume: 600 ft² × (4 in ÷ 12) = 200 ft³ = 7.41 yd³.
  3. Weight: 7.41 yd³ × 1.45 t/yd³ = 10.7 tons.
  4. Compaction and waste 10%: 10.7 × 1.10 = 11.8 tons → order 12 tons, one tri-axle load.

Questions crews ask

How much does crushed limestone cost per ton?

$25–$55 per ton for #57 and ¾″ minus at the quarry; screenings $20–$40; #2 and rip rap $30–$60. Delivery is $75–$150 per load. A 20-ton tri-axle load lands at $550–$1,200.

How much is a limestone driveway?

$1–$3 per square foot installed for a 6″ base and 2″ top course, or $600–$1,800 for a 12 × 50 ft driveway. Material is roughly 16–18 tons for that size.

Is limestone cheaper than gravel?

Usually, in regions where it is quarried — the Midwest, Texas, Florida and the Appalachians. Where limestone has to be hauled in, granite or local gravel is cheaper. Ask the yard for their nearest-quarry material.
