Paver Walkway Calculator
A walkway is a long, narrow patio: 3–4 ft wide, 4″ of base, 1″ of sand and edge restraint both sides. Curved paths cut a lot of pavers — use 10–15% waste.
Order 298 pavers — pallets hold 100–120 ft²; buy the whole pallet if you are within a few pieces.

How to calculate pavers by hand
Pavers = Area (ft²) ÷ [(L + joint) × (W + joint) ÷ 144] × (1 + waste)
Worked example
- Area: 16 ft × 12 ft = 192 ft².
- One 4 × 8″ paver with ⅛″ joints occupies 4.125 × 8.125 ÷ 144 = 0.233 ft² → 4.30 per ft².
- Net: 192 × 4.30 = 825 pavers; with 5% for cuts, 867.
- Also: bedding sand 192 ft² × 1″ = 0.59 yd³ ≈ 0.8 t; base 4″ compacted ≈ 4.3 t; polymeric sand 4 bags.
- 4 × 8″ pavers per ft²
- 4.3 (4.5 with no joint)
- 6 × 9″ pavers per ft²
- 2.6
- 12 × 12″ pavers per ft²
- 1.0
- Pallet of 4 × 8″
- ≈ 480–500 pcs · 108 ft²
Questions crews ask
How wide should a paver walkway be?
36″ minimum for a single person, 48″ for two abreast or a front entry, 60″ if a wheelchair or wheelbarrow will use it. Narrower than 3 ft feels like a garden path, which is fine at the side of the house.
How many pavers for a 30 ft walkway?
At 3½ ft wide that is 105 ft². With 6 × 9″ pavers (2.6 per ft²) you need 273, about 300 with 10% for cuts on a curved path. Add 60 lf of edging, 0.4 t of sand and 2.4 t of base.
Do I need edging on a paver path?
Yes, both sides, or the outer pavers creep and the sand washes out. Plastic or aluminium paver restraint spiked into the base is the usual choice; a soldier course set in concrete is the premium one.
