How to calculate pavers by hand

Pavers = Area (ft²) ÷ [(L + joint) × (W + joint) ÷ 144] × (1 + waste)

Worked example

  1. Area: 16 ft × 12 ft = 192 ft².
  2. One 4 × 8″ paver with ⅛″ joints occupies 4.125 × 8.125 ÷ 144 = 0.233 ft² → 4.30 per ft².
  3. Net: 192 × 4.30 = 825 pavers; with 5% for cuts, 867.
  4. Also: bedding sand 192 ft² × 1″ = 0.59 yd³ ≈ 0.8 t; base 4″ compacted ≈ 4.3 t; polymeric sand 4 bags.

Questions crews ask

How much does a paver patio cost per square foot?

$12–$25 per ft² installed for concrete pavers — $2,300–$4,800 for a 16 × 12 ft patio. Natural stone or porcelain pavers push it to $25–$50 per ft². Material is a quarter to a third; the rest is excavation, base and labor.

Is a paver patio cheaper than concrete?

No — a poured slab is $6–$12 per ft² versus $12–$25 for pavers. Pavers win on repairability (lift and relay a section), no cracking, and looks. DIY pavers, however, can come in under a contractor-poured slab.

What adds to paver patio cost?

Curves and patterns (more cuts and labor), poor soil needing a thicker base or geotextile, steps and retaining walls, and access that forces wheelbarrowing of base stone. Sealing adds $1–$2 per ft².
