How to calculate footing by hand

Cubic yards = Length (ft) × Width (in) ÷ 12 × Depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27

Worked example

  1. Cross-section: 16 in ÷ 12 × 8 in ÷ 12 = 0.89 ft².
  2. Volume: 40 ft × 0.89 ft² = 35.6 ft³ = 1.32 yd³.
  3. Waste 5%: 35.6 × 1.05 = 37.3 ft³ = 1.38 yd³ → ready-mix ticket 1.5 yd³.
  4. Bags instead: 37.3 ÷ 0.60 = 63 × 80 lb bags — a truck is cheaper above 1 yd³.

How we price this

The low, typical and high columns are the 20th, 50th and 80th percentile of published us national averages for ready-mix 3,000 psi, delivery and labor. They are estimates for budgeting, not quotes — enter your own supplier and crew prices above to replace them. Ranges are re-checked monthly; see the methodology page for how every number on this site is derived.

Questions crews ask

How much does a concrete footing cost per linear foot?

$10–$25 per linear foot installed for a 16 × 8″ residential footing including excavation, forms, two #4 bars and the pour; $25–$40 for 24 × 12″. A 120 ft perimeter runs $1,200–$3,000.

How much concrete for a house footing?

A 30 × 40 ft house has a 140 ft perimeter; at 16 × 8″ that is 4.6 yd³ — order 5 with waste. Add interior bearing-wall footings and pier pads separately.

Do footings need an inspection?

Almost always: the inspector checks trench depth, width, rebar and soil bearing before the pour. Schedule the truck for after the inspection; a failed footing inspection with a truck waiting is an expensive morning.
