How to calculate fill dirt by hand
Cubic yards = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Average depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27 × 1.20 settling
Worked example
- Area: 30 ft × 20 ft = 600 ft².
- Volume: 600 ft² × (6 in ÷ 12) = 300 ft³ = 11.1 yd³.
- Settling 20%: 11.1 × 1.20 = 13.3 yd³ → order 14 yd³.
- Trucks: 14 ÷ 12 = 2 tri-axle loads (or ask for one 14-yard load).
- 1 yd³ of fill at 6″
- ≈ 54 ft²
- 1 yd³ of fill at 12″
- ≈ 27 ft²
- 1 yd³ fill dirt
- ≈ 2,400–2,800 lb
- Tri-axle dump
- 10–14 yd³

Questions crews ask
How much does fill dirt cost per yard?
$8–$25 per cubic yard for unscreened fill, $15–$35 screened. Delivery is $75–$150 per load. A 12-yard tri-axle load of unscreened fill typically lands at $200–$400 delivered; some contractors give clean fill away if you are near a dig.
How much does it cost to level a yard?
Minor levelling of a lawn with a few yards of fill and topsoil runs $500–$1,500; regrading a whole yard with equipment is $1,000–$5,000 depending on area and slope. Machine spreading is $15–$40 per yard.
Is free fill dirt a good idea?
Often, if you can see the source. Excavation contractors and “free fill” listings save the $8–$25 per yard, but check it is free of construction debris, roots and contaminated soil, and expect to still pay for hauling.
