Concrete & Masonry / Stairs

Concrete Steps Cost Calculator

Poured steps are mostly labor — forming risers takes longer than the pour. Precast steps are often cheaper for 3–5 risers; poured wins when the steps are wide, curved or tied to a landing.

How to calculate stairs by hand

Cubic feet = Width (ft) × Run (ft) × Rise (ft) × n(n+1)/2 + Width × Landing depth × Rise × n

Worked example

  1. Each step k is a block k risers tall and one tread deep; summing 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10 tread-blocks.
  2. One tread-block: 4 ft × (11 in ÷ 12) × (7 in ÷ 12) = 2.14 ft³.
  3. Four steps: 2.14 × 10 = 21.4 ft³ = 0.79 yd³.
  4. Waste 10%: 23.5 ft³ = 0.87 yd³ → 40 × 80 lb bags, or a 1 yd³ short load.
Field reference
3 steps, 4 ft wide, 7″ × 11″
≈ 0.5 yd³ · 24 × 80 lb bags
4 steps, 4 ft wide
≈ 0.8 yd³ · 40 bags
5 steps, 4 ft wide
≈ 1.2 yd³ · ready-mix
6 steps, 5 ft wide
≈ 2.1 yd³ · ready-mix

How we price this

The low, typical and high columns are the 20th, 50th and 80th percentile of published us national averages for ready-mix 3,500 psi, delivery and labor. Questions crews ask

How much do poured concrete steps cost?

$300–$500 per step installed for a 4 ft wide set — $1,200–$2,500 for four steps — including forms, rebar, a short load and a broom finish. Curved, wide or stamped steps run $500–$900 per step.

Are precast concrete steps cheaper?

Usually, for 2–5 risers at standard widths: $700–$2,000 delivered and set by crane, in a morning. Poured is worth it for odd sizes, landings, or matching a poured stoop.

Do concrete steps need a footing?

Yes, below frost depth, or they heave and pull away from the house. That footing is often the most expensive part in northern states and is not in the per-step figure above; use the footing calculator for it.
