How to calculate pea gravel by hand

Tons = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27 × 1.4 t/yd³

Worked example

  1. Area: 12 ft × 10 ft = 120 ft².
  2. Volume: 120 ft² × (2 in ÷ 12) = 20 ft³ = 0.74 yd³.
  3. Weight: 0.74 yd³ × 1.4 t/yd³ = 1.04 tons.
  4. Waste 5%: 1.04 × 1.05 = 1.09 tons → order 1.25 tons.
  5. Bagged: 21 ft³ ÷ 0.5 ft³ = 42 × 50 lb bags.

Questions crews ask

How much does pea gravel cost?

$30–$70 per ton bulk ($40–$100 per cubic yard) at the yard, plus $50–$150 delivery. Bagged is $4–$7 per 50 lb bag. A 16 × 12 ft patio at 2″ needs about 1.75 tons: $50–$125 in stone plus delivery.

How much does a pea gravel patio cost installed?

$5–$10 per square foot including excavation, a compacted base, fabric, edging and 2″ of pea gravel. A 16 × 12 ft patio runs $1,000–$2,000 from a landscaper; DIY material is about a third of that.

Is pea gravel cheaper than pavers?

By a wide margin: a pea gravel patio is $5–$10 per ft² installed versus $15–$30 for pavers. It needs edging and an occasional rake and top-up, and it is not wheelchair or furniture friendly.
