How to calculate crushed stone by hand

Tons = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Compacted depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27 × 1.5 t/yd³ × 1.20 compaction

Worked example

  1. Area: 16 ft × 12 ft = 192 ft².
  2. Compacted volume: 192 ft² × (4 in ÷ 12) = 64 ft³ = 2.37 yd³.
  3. Weight: 2.37 yd³ × 1.5 t/yd³ = 3.56 tons compacted.
  4. Compaction and waste 20%: 3.56 × 1.20 = 4.27 tons → order 4.5 tons.
Field reference

Questions crews ask

How much does crushed stone cost per ton?

¾″ minus and crusher run are $18–$50 per ton at the quarry depending on region and haul distance; clean #57 is $25–$60. Delivery is $75–$150 per load. A 20-ton tri-axle load lands at $450–$1,100.

How much does a crushed stone driveway cost?

$1–$2.50 per square foot installed for a 6″ compacted base, or $600–$1,500 for a 12 × 50 ft driveway. Add a 2″ top course of #57 for another $0.40–$0.80 per ft².

How much is crushed stone per yard?

A cubic yard weighs about 1.5 tons, so at $32 per ton it is roughly $48 per yard before delivery. Some yards quote per yard directly; ask which they mean.
