Shingle Calculator
Bundles for any shingle job, down to a shed. Enter one plane’s footprint and pitch and the plane count. Three-tab and architectural shingles are both three bundles per square; premium designer shingles can be four or five — check the wrapper.
Order 5 bundles — order ridge cap separately (≈ 1 bundle per 25–35 lf of ridge and hips).

How to calculate shingles by hand
Roof area = Σ plane footprint × pitch factor · Squares = area ÷ 100 · Bundles = squares × 3, plus waste
Worked example
- One plane: 40 ft × 14 ft = 560 ft² footprint × 1.118 (6/12) = 626 ft².
- Two planes: 1,252 ft² = 12.5 squares.
- Waste 10%: 1,377 ft² → 42 bundles (14 squares).
- Also: 2 rolls of synthetic underlayment, 14 lb of nails, 2 bundles of starter, plus ridge cap for 40 ft of ridge.

Questions crews ask
How many bundles of shingles for a 10x12 shed?
Two planes of 12 × 5 ft at 4/12: 60 × 1.054 = 63 ft² each, 127 ft² total, 139 with waste → 5 bundles, plus one bundle of starter/ridge. A 4-square shed roof is a one-day job.
How many shingles are in a bundle?
21–22 three-tab shingles, or 20 architectural shingles, covering 33⅓ ft². Bundles weigh 65–80 lb; a square (three bundles) is about 210 lb — plan the rooftop delivery.
Three-tab or architectural shingles?
Architectural (laminated) shingles cost 10–20% more per square, last 25–30 years versus 15–20, carry higher wind ratings and hide roof imperfections. Three-tab only makes sense on a shed or to match an existing roof.
