Gravel Driveway Cost Calculator
Delivered and spread cost for a gravel driveway. The default is a 4″ lift of crusher run base; add a second run for a 2″ #57 top layer. Enter your quarry’s price per ton to replace the national range.
Order 11.75 t — quarries sell by the ton (some by the ½ ton); a tri-axle carries about 20 tons.

How to calculate gravel by hand
Tons = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27 × density (t/yd³)
Worked example
- Area: 20 ft × 10 ft = 200 ft².
- Volume: 200 ft² × (3 in ÷ 12) = 50 ft³ = 1.85 yd³.
- Weight: 1.85 yd³ × 1.4 t/yd³ (#57 stone) = 2.59 tons.
- Waste 5%: 2.59 × 1.05 = 2.72 tons → order 2.75 tons.
- Bagged instead: 52.5 ft³ ÷ 0.5 ft³ = 105 × 50 lb bags.
- 1 ton of #57 at 3″ deep
- ≈ 77 ft²
- 1 ton of #57 at 4″ deep
- ≈ 58 ft²
- 1 yd³ of #57 stone
- ≈ 2,800 lb · 1.4 t
- 1 yd³ crusher run
- ≈ 3,000 lb · 1.5 t
How we price this
The low, typical and high columns are the 20th, 50th and 80th percentile of published us national averages for crusher run, at the quarry, delivery and labor. They are estimates for budgeting, not quotes — enter your own supplier and crew prices above to replace them. Ranges are re-checked monthly; see the methodology page for how every number on this site is derived.

Questions crews ask
How much does a gravel driveway cost?
Installed, $1–$3 per square foot for a 4–6″ base and a 2″ top layer — $700–$2,000 for a 12 × 50 ft single driveway. Material is $20–$60 per ton, delivery $50–$150 per load, and spreading $15–$40 per ton if you hire it out.
How much is a ton of gravel delivered?
At the quarry, crusher run is $20–$50 per ton and #57 stone $25–$60. Delivery is charged per truckload — typically $85–$150 for a local tri-axle — so a 20-ton load lands at $500–$1,300 delivered depending on region.
How many tons of gravel for a 12x50 driveway?
At 4″ of crusher run: 600 ft² × 4 ÷ 324 = 7.4 yd³ × 1.5 t/yd³ = 11.1 tons, about 11.75 with 5% waste — one tandem load. A 2″ #57 top course adds another 5.2 tons.
